Most homeowners don't think much about their chimney until there's a problem. By then, the mortar joints are cracked, the crown is failing, and water has already started working its way in. That's exactly the kind of situation we deal with regularly here in Clinton, IL - and it's one of those repairs that really can't wait.

Here's what we were working with on this one. The mortar joints had deteriorated badly, the crown had chunks missing, and you could see open gaps right at the top where water had a straight shot into the structure. Left alone, that kind of damage spreads fast. Water gets in, freezes, expands, and the bricks start to shift. What starts as a mortar problem turns into a full structural issue.

The process on a job like this starts with grinding out all the old, failed mortar. We don't just slap new mortar over the top of the bad stuff - that would fail just as quickly. Once everything is ground out clean, we pack in fresh mortar and work it into every joint. Then the crown gets rebuilt so the top of the chimney is properly sealed and protected again. We also addressed the flashing at the base to make sure water isn't sneaking in where the chimney meets the roof.

The finished chimney is structurally solid, with fresh mortar throughout and a repaired crown that will actually keep water out. It's not glamorous work, but it's the kind of thing that protects your home from serious, expensive damage down the road. If your chimney is showing cracks, missing mortar, or any signs of leaking, it's worth getting eyes on it sooner rather than later.
